Disinformation research and policy – a Government scientist’s perspective

Dr Neil Verrall from Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) was the speaker on 13 November 2019.

Dr Verrall's talk exlored how disinformation is not new; however, the modern digital information environment provides the vehicle for the unprecedented speed, volume and reach of false information that has been created or disseminated with the deliberate intent to mislead in order to cause harm, or for personal, political or financial gain. The talk gave a brief historical reprise on disinformation that brought the audience up-to-date with its contemporary use. Dr Verrall highlighted government efforts to address the issue, and how the research community can assist government scientists and policymakers through an interdisciplinary approach to multimodal communication research.
