IMCC Hub Workshop: Multimodal Analysis: Content analysis in Context

Co-organised by Anna Wilson and Rustam Jamilov. Co-chaired by Anna Wilson and Scott Hale.

Underlying this approach is the logic of researching the relationship between content and regional context in human communication (e.g. media / political communication / propaganda / disinformation) at speed and scale.

Such an approach is conditioned on the one hand by the need to employ and interweave concepts and methods from linguistics, cognitive science, and computer science in such a way that makes them most successful for research on the content, and on the other hand, by the need to understand the contextual factors influencing the interpretation of the content; i.e. to employ concepts, methods and findings from the fields of political science, international relations, sociology, anthropology, history, and economics.

As our past and on-going projects have shown, research on the content and the context of human communication are inter-dependent, as it is not just that content is more successfully interpreted through understanding the context, but the understanding of the context is significantly improved through the successful content analysis of communication in general and disinformation in particular.

On 17th June, we will look at Russia/Eastern Europe and Brazil/ Latin America in the format of ‘roundtable’ discussions.
